The Lion King: Pride Rock on Broadway
Published in Hardcover by Hyperion (January, 1998)
Authors: Julie Taymor, Alexis Greene, and Tim Rice
Average review score:

Great!!!!
I just can say that it is great. There are no other words for this book...

The Lion King is GOD!
I absolutely LOVE The Lion King. I, unfortunately have not yet been able to see it yet, but I might this summer and I'm so excited! I am 14 years old and I have recognized, for a long time now, Julie Taymor's brilliance! She is a designing and directing genius! I bought her SUPREME book title Playing With Fire, which I strongly recommend you all to buy...

The music from TLK on Broadway is, in itself, a brilliant thing! And, once again, if you don't have the CD, go out and buy that too. This book is an awesome thing that tells the whole story of bringing life to the godlike stage production we know to be TLKoB. The book is split into three parts; conceptualization, development, and performance. Julie Taymor is awesome and I love her! I would just DIE if I could meet her!

Many people don't understand the concept of infinity; I can't explain it except that it "goes on forever;" which is the way I feel about this book, the music, and ultimately, the musical. I'd give this book infinite stars! Enjoy!

it's a great book of the musical!!!!!!!
"The Lion King : Pride Rock on Broadway" was really fun looking at.It had wonderful photos from the show and told how the show came together from conception to production design. It showed you costume designs, the actors in full costume, the sets, how they did the phenominal special effects, and much more! It's cool, and one of my favorite theater books!

Couscous and Other Good Food from Morocco
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (November, 1973)
Authors: Paula Wolfert, Gael Greene, and Sidonie Coryn
Average review score:

Much More Than Just Couscous!!!
This book is the "Western-wife-of-Moroccan-husband" dream come true, & is the most well-researched, comprehensive manual on Moroccan cuisine I've seen. The high point is Wolfert's very detailed lesson in properly preparing & steaming Moroccan couscous grains (a far cry from our boxed couscous), a lesson often lacking in other cookbooks. Another gem is her extensively-researched compilation of ras el hanout components. She clarifies western-translation of Moroccan ingredients, provides useful preparation shortcuts, & helpfully suggests alternative ingredients & equipment for the western cook. Importantly, she points out ( & even provides a map with detailed examples) regional differences in preparation of many dishes - differences of which many Moroccans themselves may not be aware. This information is vital for the western wife attempting to prepare her Moroccan husband his favorite home-cooked meal.

The book is also a great read, esp. her stories of life in Morocco, & excellent cultural/religious background information. It has tons of useful reference material, including complete menus, specialty-food suppliers in the US, a full discussion of the spices/herbs/waters used in Moroccan cuisine, et al.

Most importantly, after some practice on my part, my picky Moroccan husband has been thrilled with the results!

I would also highly recommend Robert Carrier's "Taste of Morocco" (see his shebbekia recipe); & for helpful, color photos (& recipes of course), Kitty Morse's "Cooking At The Casbah" & Fatema Hal's "The Food of Morocco" (from the "Food of.." series).

Very good foods indeed.
Reading this book is a joy for a Moroccophile because Ms. Wolfert is so passionate about not only the foods of Morocco but the kingdom itself. Although her recipes for couscous, tagines, and desserts are often time-consuming (Moroccan cooks spend long time in their kitchen --- I reserve those dishes for a special dinner or dessert party), they always give excellent results. I have tried cooking couscous in the oven and in the microwave, but they didn't come close to the light and fluffy couscous I made with a couscousiere following her instruction. Her Moroccan salads can be assembled relatively quickly, and they make excellent side dishes for any Mediterranean-style meals.
A local Moroccan restaurant owner highly recommended this book.

Belami
Amazing book!! The recipes are authentiques and accurates!
Outstanding job.

I'd Rather Have a Root Canal Than Do Cold Calling
Published in Paperback by SuccessWorks Publishing (12 August, 1999)
Author: Shawn A. Greene
Average review score:

A very useful book....
I have read them all. Always looking for an edge or a way to get better. I was having some serious problems getting through a slump while suffering from some heavy call reluctance; I came across this book, and it is a jewel. The author manages to capture just about every issue facing anyone that has to get on the phone. One idea is worth the price of the book, and there are alot of ideas in this book. And the author walks the talk..

Cold Calling Dentistry
This is the best book ever on the subject of telemarketing and prospecting...often (and sadly) referred to as COLD CALLING. Written with a sense of humor and a healthy balance in the reality checkbook, it steers clear of the canned script ideas perpetuated by so many of the "sales-gurus" and focuses on achievable goals (just making the call is seen as a success) and realistic, friendly dialogue with the person on the other end. What I enjoyed most is Ms Greene's "angle" that the caller not be so-damn-clever and put him/herself in the listener's place and make the process enjoyable and informative as opposed to adversarial. Read the book, visit the website, subscribe to the free e-sales-tips and take advantage of the author's offer for a hour of free coaching. What a bargain! A fun, fresh and human approach to a necessary element of building a contact base.

Great Book, Great Coaching
I initially "browsed" this book because of the title. Yes I would rather have a root canal than do cold calling was my thought at the time. I bought the book because of the content, her consultative style of writing and her practical suggestions for taking on the task of prospecting and cold calling.

I have recommended the book to business associates for one other additional reason-purchase the book and get an hour of sales coaching as part of the deal. Shawn is excellent at applying her insight, experience, and knowledge to my business issues-selling Internet marketing solutions. She takes the concepts presented in the book and gives additional guidance on the realistic application to my situation.

Buy the book for the cold calling framework, take advantage of the coaching for the practical application to your business situation-both are well worth the time and money.

The Business Style Handbook: An A-to-Z Guide for Writing on the Job with Tips from Communications Experts at the Fortune 500
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Trade (12 February, 2002)
Authors: Helen Cunningham and Brenda Greene
Average review score:

Write to the Point
This book may be the handiest and clearest book of tips on basic business writing I've read in a long time. The book's tips on writing clearly and for the reader of the office memo or e-mail are direct, short and to the point.

It doesn't waste words but it doesn't omit a lot of topics, either. For example, a memo writer is reminded to "write as you speak--if you speak clearly." Thousands, no, millions, of words have been devoted to this topic. This one sentence sums it up nicely.

Some may quibble with minor points in the book. For example, it advises readers not to capitalize the "The" in newspaper names because some papers use a "the" and some don't. To my way of thinking (and training), that's a question easily resolved by finding out what the newspaper uses. But this is a tiny point.

I much prefer the authors' valuable and wide-ranging bits of information:

khan: lowercase this term, which is a title for a ruler, an official or an important person in India and some central Asian countries.

c.o.d.: Use c.o.d. with periods for all references. It stands for cash on delivery. Without periods, it could be confused with the word cod, as in fish.
saccharin/saccharine: Often misspelled. The first is a sugar substitute; the second means overly sweet.

And so on, touching on topics from A to Z, as billed. I highly recommend this book.

The Business Style Handbook
An invaluable tool. I just started back in the workplace after an absence of many years and this book put me right back on the business track. It even helped my son with the writing of his resume. Thanks for all the useful information.

The Greatest handbook
English is not my first language but I need to write clearly, quickly, and without errors to succeed in my job. This book is my secret weapon. It is well organized and easy to use. The A-Z section answers a lot of questions I have about language and the chapters on business writing contain good advice for writing more effectively.

Greene & Greene: Masterworks
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (October, 1998)
Authors: Bruce Smith, Alexander Vertikoff, and Edward R. Bosley
Average review score:

Greene Giants!
This is my first introduction to Greene & Greene's work. If you have never seen it before, think of Frank Lloyd Wright's work, except everything is allot more rounded, and comfortable looking, except for the exteriors. I would say though that Frank Lloyd Wright was a better architect, but he could have gotten Greene & Greene to make his homes interiors allot more homey looking, and less dated. If your a fan of Wright's or the Art's & Crafts movement buy the book.

A magnificent introduction to two great architects
The Greene brothers were architects who designed in the Arts and Crafts style. Like Frank Lloyd Wright, their style was so distinctive that they are not considered as examples of a type, but as architects whose style stands by itself. Unlike Frank Lloyd Wright, the Greene brothers' practice was almost completely limited to personal residences. This has probably limited the reach of their reputation. Outside of the Gamble house, which has been made into a museum, the work of the Greene brothers is generally not accessible to the public. All but one of their houses was in California, most of them in Pasadena. One wonders how well known Wright would be had he never designed the Guggenheim, or the Marin County Civic Center, or if he had never ventured outside of Chicago.

This book addresses the problem by taking us inside twenty-five examples of Greene and Greene's work. The text is accompanied by the breathtaking photography of Alexander Vertikoff. I own a large collection of books on the architecture of this period, and those illustrated by Vertikoff stand in a class by themselves. His photos are magnificent, doing justice to the material he portrays. I doubt if there is a finer photographer working in this field today.

With photos like these, it would have been easy to turn this volume into nothing more than a glorious picture book. Instead, Bruce Smith provides an engaging story of the careers of the two architects. The best writing is found in an extensive introduction, where the author discusses the Greene and Greene style in general terms. One can see at a glance how the style starts with Arts and Crafts. Indeed, there is a wealth of Stickley furniture in many of the houses. It is equally obvious how the two went beyond the plain craftsman designs so common further east. The Japanese influence was much stronger here, and the craftsmanship in the wood joinery was much more refined. There is more woodworking than carpentry here. The woods included Burmese teak, Honduras mahogany, Port Orford cedar, oak, maple and redwood. In some cases, the brothers were able to design furniture, landscaping and gardens to go with the architecture.

For the remainder of the book, we get a tour through twenty-five houses designed by Greene and Greene. Each house is presented in the order of its design and construction, with a history of the entire house to the present day. In some cases, this includes restoration after some abuse. Some of these houses were created on a budget; others were done with no apparent limits on the imagination of the architects. All are works of art, created as a labor of love by all concerned. For anyone unfamiliar with the work of Greene and Greene, this is an excellent introduction. For those who are already captivated, this book is a must, if only for those magnificent pictures.

Greene with Envy
As an aspiring woodworker with apparently very little natural talent, I can only view Greene & Greene's work with a mixture of awe and jealousy. While I find much of what Wright has done to be at times inaccessible and dated (primarily because so many others have attempted to copy or incorporate his style into theirs - and failed miserably by the way), the Greene's work is absolutely gorgeous, and would fit in with many current styles.....But then again you all know that. The question is why buy this particular book?

If you are looking for wonderful, full-page color photographs this is it. The first 50 pages are devoted to the G&G style; there is a page or two devoted to Materials, Joinery, Lighting etc. Descriptions are quite brief, and include a couple of pics.

The next 170 pages are devoted to 25 different houses with narration about the original design process, the ensuing history, and the current state. Again tons of color pics, and lots of shots of the furniture they designed to go with the particular house.

If you are looking for an in-depth discussion, check out Randall Makinson's "Architecture as a Fine Art/Furniture and Related Designs. These two books (now available in one edition) cover the G&G history in detail, but have less photos (many in black and white). They do have many front on center views of the furniture (as well as early drawings) so if you are interested in building their furniture, these books make a suitable companion to the one being reviewed.

Protective Groups in Organic Synthesis

Author: Theodora W. Greene
Average review score:

The Book Will be Your Bible in Lab
If you doing any sort of organic chemistry in the lab, you will really get your hands into this handy reference on protecting groups. The book neatly organized into functional groups and their protecting groups. A Primer for organic chemists. It will save you zillion hours of researching for papers/references on the appropriate protecting groups used in reactions.

Essential
If you are a graduate student in organic chemistry then this book is a must. It will help with class work as well as your lab work. This book is the authority on protective groups and is an essential reference. Have no qualms about purchasing it.

Quintessential Book for Organic Chemists
This book is absolutely essential for the organic chemist. Well organized by functional group to be protected and well indexed to allow searches by protection group, this book has it all. If you have a question about how to protect a particular functional group, this is the book for it. Under each section a plethora of references may be found--with each one succinctly summarized to avoid looking for references that have nothing to do with what you want. This book is essential whether you are a graduate student studying what reactions you need to know to do the research assigned you or a professor writing research proposals (indeed, I bought my own copy of this book from Amazon because the ones in our school library were always checked out to one of the professors). In summary, it is an excellent reference text that should be on every organic chemist's desk.

A Journal of Daily Renewal: The Companion to Make the Connection
Published in Paperback by Hyperion (Adult Trd Pap) (September, 1996)
Authors: Bob Greene and Oprah Winfrey
Average review score:

Great way to journal
If you are a person that likes to do the journaling thing, this book is for you. Each day is set up with two pages, one that you can write your thoughts. This particular page is great as it gives you an inspirational quote every day. The other page is the one where you get to note how much water you drank, the fruits and veggies you ate. You also get to enter in some info about exercise that you did and more. Some of us can do things better if we put them down on paper. If this is your style, this is a great book for you.

Great way to keep making the connection
When I first bought the journal in 1996, when the program first came out, I put it on a shelf and let it collect dust for six months than I started Oprah's program. What made me stay on the excerise/eating right program was this journal I had to put everything I ate, felt, did down on paper. Sometimes that is the hardest part. The important thing I found out is that when you put your feelings down on paper, you can detect a pattern to why you are not succeding in losing weight. Because of Oprah's journal, I was able to see what I was doing wrong and correct it. I now years later review my first journal to keep giving me inspiration to continue on the right track. This journal simplify's the process outlined in Oprah's book by making it easy to check off how much water you drank and check off the fruits you ate, it enables you to see how much more you have to consume for the day to stay on the plan, there is also lots of room to discuss how much excerise you did, and how you felt about it. This journal helped me stay on Oprah's plan to lose weight, it is well worth the purchase.

A positive journal is excellent "brain food"...
I bought this out of curiosity. Following a journal like this one is something that can help all of us but which we all mostly overlook...positive attitude reinforcers on a daily basis. Though the concept may seem like a lot of wimpy self-help nonsense, your thoughts affect everything in life. When tuned in the right direction they bring the "magic" that logic and analysis never reach. Just ask Oprah...her life is an example...an attitude that would never accept defeat. There is scientific proof that this is true, for all you skeptics: though optimists have a less accurate estimation of "reality" around them, they deal with challenges better and have more success in all realms of life. Hence, eventually your reality changes to match your optimistic and slightly unreal perceptions. A little Polyanna is good food for all of our brains and this helps you exercise your "Polyanna lobe" for more success and happiness. I have even seen my own life turn around using this approach. I did it as an experiment and was surprised beyond all expectations repeatedly!!...all the best to Oprah and Bob Greene...may I recommend "the care and feeding of your brain" as a companion read that shows you what else you can do to optimize your thoughts and your life...Kenneth Giuffre MD, "The Care and Feeding of Your Brain"

It Must Have Been Moonglow-Ebk
Published in Digital by Random House ()
Author: Phyllis Greene
Average review score:

short and sweet
I read this book after seeing it mentioned in a review and was interested in what life must be like when a spouse whom you have been married to for a long time passes away. This would be a great book to give to someone who is going through the grief of losing a spouse and may provide some comfort in the universality of the experience.

A BOOK FOR ANYONE WHO HAS LOVED AND LOST!
One need not lose a spouse or partner to appreciate the feelings and emotions that run rampant through the pages of this beautiful book. It is all about grieving, losing, coping, planning and making the decision to go on anyway. While the book is apparently aimed at middle-aged women who had long, happy marriages, according to editorial reviews, the book is also invaluable to those who have suffered through a divorce or simply lost someone very special from their life for any reason. Loneliness, emptiness, despair, and fear, know no boundaries.

"It Must Have Been Moonglow" is inspirational, sad, joyful and a whole basket full of mixed emotions. What the author must have felt while writing the book is not much different than anyone who has loved and lost. What sets the author apart from the rest of the world is that she has a unique ability to be able to express herself in words that many others cannot do quite as eloquently. This is a beautifully moving, sensitive book and most deserving of a five-star rating.

Insight and comfort...
...is what Mrs. Greene provided for my mother after we lost my Dad. They had a long and happy marriage and while we had plenty of warning that we would lose Dad, she was understandably inconsolable when he died... ...until she read an article by Bob Greene about his mother's book. I can honestly say, she started to turn the corner while reading this book and has read it many, many times. I am online tonight buying a copy of it for my mother to give to one of her friends who recently lost her husband. I hope Mrs. Greene knows what a profound and generous contribution she has made to many grieving spouses. I personally would like to thank her for helping my mother resume her life and begin to find happiness again.

Buy the book, you won't regret it.

Owen Foote, Frontiersman
Published in Hardcover by Clarion Books (September, 1999)
Authors: Martha Weston and Stephanie Greene
Average review score:

I love it
This book is Great!! Because it`s about two kids that have a tree house in the forest. They take a nature book, a compass, a canteen, pepper flakes, and a hat.But two other kids are in their tree house and wreck it. So the two kids set traps to scare the other boys. I like it because I like Owen Foote books.

Modern Daniel Boone
This book, Owen Foote, Frontiersman, was an enjoyable book because of the different events that Owen faced. These events allowed me to connect with some of the things that he encountered. Most young readers would be able to connect to having a friend like Joseph and the what Owen and Joseph encounters as frontiersman. The organization of the book was easy to follow and the sentences were easy to read and understand. There are a few pictures in black and white throughout the book, but these are not necessary but are handy for readers to connect with the event taking place. Young readers, boy or girls, that were interested in the outdoors would take a great liking to this book.

Awesome!!
This book was FANTASTIC! I have three children aged 4-10. They all read it and loved it, including me. My nine year old son liked it the most. Stephanie Greene is and exeptional author and she writes so fluidly and perfectly for kids. I encourage her to write even more books because we have enjoyed this one and the others so much. Thanks!

All Summer Long
Published in Paperback by Griffin Trade Paperback (July, 2000)
Author: Bob Greene
Average review score:

Maybe I'll Understand When I Have My Midlife Crisis
No wonder Bob Greene's so much more well known as a columnist than a novelist. All Summer Long, while full of good writing and interesting situations, seems to me to be self-serving and melodramatic. If only this had been written as non-fiction, I would have not only believed it, but would have respected it. Instead, I could predict what would happen pages ahead of time and kept thinking that maybe I have can have career as a novelist after all. It's just not very interesting to anyone but the characters. If I ran into any of these guys in a airport or at a ballgame or in a hotel lobby, I'd not only think them quite unspectacular, but wouldn't dig too deeply into their lives, as I'm sure I'd be bored before they got around to reliving their first "adventure."

Oh, woe is the forty-three year old Midwestern male, who can't face the reality of everyday life. Sure, there isn't a person alive who wouldn't like to take the summer off and travel, but I don't know how many of us want to do it with a bunch of people that we were really only close to 25 years ago. Forget my friends from high school, I want to take off with the people who mean something to me today -- people with whom I have something in common besides having attended the same school two and a half decades ago. This is exactly why we have reunions every five years, not every day. For the most part, they have no relevance in our daily lives.

That said, I still enjoyed the escapism this book offers. Greene offers simple, but significant insights into human nature, especially those that I imagine for men in their mid forties. The trio's travels are both funny and sad, and Greene doesn't necessarily push the reader one way or another. Things just happen and the summer is over, just like it is for you and me. And just like yours and mine, no one can really say they're interested in these sad sacks.

Greene steals the title from the Beach Boys song, although a song more representative and equally sappy might have been Terry Jacks's Seasons In The Sun. They had joy, they had fun, they had a season in the sun. Big deal.

A Great Escape
I stumbled upon Bob Greene's All Summer Long a couple of years ago when I read his "Hang Time" book about Michael Jordan. The subject matter of several friends putting everything aside for a Summer and roadtriping around the country has always been appealing to me and this story didn't disappoint. Although this is a fictional account, you really feel as if the author is recanting a journey that he actually took. I found myself really wanting to do something like this someday as well. I highly recommend this book.

No Pulitzer - Just Extremely Readable and Entertaining
This book will take the male reader - from 18 to 80 - on a fantasy ride that will hold his interest from page one to the end. This wasn't written to be considered "literature;" it simply entertains very well and gives the reader's his money's worth.

I'm now reading it for the second time. How many books get THAT award from readers?
